A fish finder can feel like a wall of noise the first time you turn one on — colors, arches, lines, and numbers all competing for your attention. But once you understand what you're actually looking at, it becomes one of the most useful tools in the boat.
Here's what's happening under the hood, and how to make sense of the screen.
Every fish finder works on the same basic principle: a transducer mounted on your hull sends out a sound pulse, that pulse bounces off anything it hits (bottom, structure, fish), and the unit measures how long the echo takes to return. The stronger and faster the echo, the closer and denser the object. String thousands of these pings together and you get a moving picture of what's beneath your boat.
That sound pulse doesn't travel in a straight line — it spreads out in a cone shape as it moves away from the transducer. This matters more than most beginners realize: a fish "on screen" isn't necessarily directly under your boat, it could be anywhere within that cone.
Traditional 2D sonar sends a single frequency straight down in a cone and is the classic view most anglers grew up with. Fish typically show up as arches, and a harder, denser bottom (rock, gravel) shows as a thick, bright line, while a soft bottom (mud, silt) shows thinner and fainter.
CHIRP sonar (Compressed High-Intensity Radar Pulse) improves on 2D sonar by sweeping through a range of frequencies instead of transmitting just one. This gives better target separation and clearer detail, especially at depth, and has become standard on most modern units.
Down Imaging / DownScan uses a narrow, high-frequency beam aimed straight down to produce a nearly photo-realistic image of what's directly beneath the boat. It's excellent for identifying structure like brush piles, rock, and weed edges. Fish tend to show up as dots or short marks rather than classic arches.
Side Imaging / SideScan aims beams out to the left and right of the boat instead of straight down, letting you scan a wide swath of water — sometimes hundreds of feet to each side — to locate structure and fish-holding areas without driving directly over them.
Most anglers run 2D/CHIRP and Down or Side Imaging simultaneously in a split screen, using the strengths of each to build a fuller picture.
This is the single most misunderstood part of a fish finder screen. The classic arch shape doesn't mean the fish is arch-shaped — it's an artifact of geometry. As your boat moves, a fish crosses through the sonar cone. When it enters the edge of the cone, it's farther from the transducer, so the echo takes slightly longer, showing deeper on screen. As the fish passes under the center of the cone, it's at its closest point, showing shallower. As it exits the far edge, the depth reading increases again. That rise-and-fall pattern draws the arch.
A boat sitting still over a stationary fish won't produce an arch at all — it'll show as a flat mark, since there's no movement through the cone to create the curve.
- Depth is displayed as a number, usually in the corner, and updates continuously.
- The bottom line runs along the base of the screen. Thickness and brightness indicate bottom hardness — thick and bright usually means rock or gravel, thin and faint usually means mud or silt.
- Color scale typically runs from warm colors (strongest returns) to cool colors (weakest returns) — yellow or red for dense objects like fish or hard bottom, blue for weaker returns like softer structure or suspended debris.
- Time moves right to left (or left to right, depending on the unit) — the newest data appears on one edge of the screen and scrolls across as older readings shift away, so what happened a few seconds ago is still visible.
- Water temperature, often built into the transducer, is displayed as a running number and is worth watching, since temperature is one of the biggest drivers of fish location and activity.
- Frequency: Higher frequencies (like 800 kHz) give sharper detail but less depth penetration and a narrower cone; lower frequencies (like 50 kHz) penetrate deeper with a wider cone but less fine detail. Most anglers fish shallow-to-mid depths with a higher frequency and switch lower for deep water.
- Sensitivity/gain: Set too high, the screen fills with clutter; set too low, you'll miss weak returns like small or suspended fish. Start on auto, then fine-tune manually once you get a feel for your local water.
- Chart/scroll speed: This should roughly match your boat speed. Too fast or too slow and returns smear together, turning clean arches into vague blobs.
- Range/zoom: Leave it on auto for general cruising, but narrow the range manually when working a specific depth or piece of structure — a tighter range makes targets much easier to read.
- Don't chase every mark on the screen — small blips near the surface are often bait, debris, or air bubbles, not gamefish.
- Watch for fish holding tight to structure (rock piles, drop-offs, submerged timber) rather than suspended in open water; structure-relating fish are usually easier, more consistent targets.
- If your unit has GPS and mapping, drop waypoints on productive spots as you find them. Returning to the exact same rock pile or drop-off next trip is far easier with a saved waypoint than by memory.
- Give yourself time on the water. Reading a fish finder well is a skill built from repetition — the more hours you spend watching your local lake's patterns, the faster the screen starts to make intuitive sense.
A fish finder isn't magic — it's geometry and sound physics translated into a picture. Once you understand that arches come from motion through a cone, that bottom hardness shows in the thickness of the bottom line, and that Down/Side Imaging trade coverage for detail (or vice versa), the screen stops being noise and starts being one of the most useful pieces of information you have on the water.
